There are different types of woods, such as pine woods and rosewoods, balsa woods and so on. Some types of the woods are mainly used to the construction industry due to their stability and strength. They could be used to make the planks of the scaffolding to endure the pressure of construction workers and tools, the beams of the houses to support the weight of the structures.
At the same time, some types of the woods are mostly used to make furnitures in our house. They are endowed with the ability to resist the worms and pests. Thereby, they could be endowed with a longer service life with less maintenance. When it comes to the application of balsa woods, they are the essential material to make models. Sometimes, they are preferred by the surfers to make surfboards.
Compared with the woods which are used for construction industry, we could find that the balsa woods are characterized by lighter weight. With the similar size, the weight the balsa woods should be much lighter than any other types of woods. Well, the lightness is considered one of the determining factor to make models. The heavier woods would add the difficulty to assemble the models.
Frankly, some types of the plastic materials are capable of having the similar lightness and flexibility compared with balsa wood, such as PVC. However, they are not endowed with the suitable strength to form the model structure. The plastic materials may be easy to bent due to their flexibility, but how could they endure certain pressure with out being bent? In addition, while we need to glue the models, it is obvious that the balsa woods are easier to be glues together.
While we have finished the models with the balsa woods, we should maintain the models with proper methods. We could paint the models to make them resistant to water and we could cover the surface of the models with some special chemical materials to make them resist to worms and pests.
